Did you know that Flagstaff Gardens are Melbourne’s oldest gardens and the city’s most elevated position? The name derives from the ‘Flagstaff’ erected in 1840 which was part of a signalling system between Melbourne and ships sailing into the port at Williamstown.
Flagstaff Gardens is situated on one of two hills to the immediate north of the Yarra River, Birrarung. The site formed topography important to the Aboriginal people.
It was also the place from which news of Victoria’s separation from NSW was signalled to Melbourne residents through the lighting of a great bonfire in 1850.
In 1862 the site was established as a public garden and landscaped by the Deputy Surveyor General Clement Hodgkinson in 1865, the garden contained numerous trees of scientific and aesthetic importance, many of which remain today.
Today, Flagstaff Gardens comprises of 7 hectares of beautiful parkland which offer a tranquil green space away from the hustle and bustle of the inner city.
